Building Vocabulary: 2014-15 Hump Day Book Club Book List

Building_VocabularyHappy hump day!

As I have previously mentioned, I’m involved in a book club with a great group of ladies that meets the second Wednesday of every month. October is our annual business meeting where we elect our officers for the coming year, choose our reading list, and discuss any necessary business items. I should probably have posted this sooner in case anyone was interested in reading November’s book with us, but alas, I did not. I am honored to have been elected to serve as this year’s president, and it just so happens that I’ll be hosting this evening. We’re going into our fifth year, and it really is a special group. We have read a lot of great books as well!

The way our club works: we have one list of hostesses that rotates and one list of presenters that rotates. The hostess each month is responsible for the location and refreshments. The presenter chooses her book at the annual business meeting so we are able to create the schedule for the year. Sometimes we have to swap it up if plans change throughout the year, but for the most part, this formula has worked great. Whenever I host, I try to have the menu coincide with the book in some way. A few years ago, the book when I hosted was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and I served Swedish dishes. This month’s book was set in North Carolina, so I’ll be serving BBQ.

“Julie Barenson’s young husband left her two unexpected gifts before he died – a puppy named Singer and the promise that he would always be watching over her. Now, four years later, twenty-nine year-old Julie is far too young to have given up on love. She may be ready to risk caring for someone again. But who? Should it be Richard Franklin, the sophisticated, handsome engineer who treats her like a queen? Or Mike Harris, the down-to-earth nice guy who was her husband’s best friend? Choosing one of them should bring her more happiness than she’s had in years. Instead, Julie is soon fighting for her life in a nightmare spawned by a chilling deception and jealousy so poisonous that it has become a murderous desire . . .The Guardian contains all the qualities readers expect from Nicholas Sparks. But here, he adds a new electrifying intensity – and page after page of riveting suspense.”
