School Days Are Here Again | Preparing for Another School Year Part 4 School Lunches

School lunches can be an absolute nightmare to come up with for the year. Not to mention if you have to add in a picky eater, allergies, no provided lunches, staying healthy, etc… One of my jobs at the preschool is to unpack the preschool lunches. It is amazing all of things people bring to school for their children. I have seen it ALL!! Many of these children eat better than I do! There are so many lists out there of great ideas. So instead of trying to create a new list, I thought I would share some tips to remember and my favorite lunch inspiration lists.

Tips for Lunches: There are some things that are just no-nos when it comes to lunches at school. Remember we have hundreds of children to deal with – so even if it doesn’t seem like a big deal at home or is convenient… It may actually be the opposite.

  1. Make sure your child can open most of their lunch – it is hard to get to everyone!
  2. Make sure it is not something that needs to be heated especially if your school doesn’t have a usable microwave.
  3. TOSS all the squeeze pouches!! They create such a mess and are too easy for the children to play with.
  4. Label all containers and ice packs so we can return them to you later.
  5. Don’t send candy or too many sweets. Many children don’t get dessert so it is hard for others who do not get to partake in the treats.
  6. Do NOT send fruit cups with juice. It is so messy and honestly hard to eat because they are slimy
  7. Follow your schools food policy!! I.e. Don’t send shellfish to a Kosher school.
  8. Please practice having your child sit during lunches at home. This will prevent them from a lot of trouble at school.

General Lunch Ideas – If you’re lucky enough that you don’t have to worry about allergens these are the lists for you. They are great for going to school or at home. With this wide variety of lunches you shouldn’t have any trouble feeding your child this school year.

Nut-Free Ideas – TONS of school are “nut or peanut free” now since these are the most common allergies. There is a surprising number of items that may contain nuts so it is hard to remember them all. Here are some great lists that will make those challenges much easier.

Other allergen free ideas – More and more children have restricted diets nowadays due to a variety of reasons from allergies to lifestyle choices. Here are some great options that you can implement into any classroom.

School lunches can cause a lot of anxiety for parents even when they have the best of eaters. I hope that these lists can help ease some tension in the school lunch creations. Remember these lunches are also great for both adults and children – even when eating at home! Here’s to having a fantastic school year!
